    The Origins of Personality

Do you ever think to yourself, why do I do what I do in relationships, at work, and with friends? This is a question we all ask ourselves at some point along our journey, and the Enneagram gives us a window into seeing the patterns and survival mechanisms we have used since birth. The good news is once we can see our patterns based upon our Enneagram type, we have a choice and more compassion for ourselves and others. Join us as we talk about the why behind our choices and behaviors.

Nina Maples is a certified Enneagram teacher and has been a student of the Enneagram for thirty years. Nina has taught Enneagram classes and is currently a guide with the Enneagram Prison Project, teaching in the jail in her hometown of Louisville, KY.

Working with Children... with the benefit of the Enneagram

As we observe and interact in our relationships, the Enneagram offers us a way to understand what is happening and how to best respond to it. In those relationships in which we have a leadership role, the Enneagram is an effective tool helping to make clear what is influencing both behavior and response. Our leadership roles often include children and young people (perhaps as a parent, a teacher, a relative, a friend) inviting us to help strengthen their awareness capacity and their problem - solving skillfulness. This does not require we type them, but it does require we know the Enneagram. Let’s talk more about the ways in which we can use our Enneagram knowledge to help those we are influencing to better interact in life as we take advantage of what the Enneagram has for us.

Sali Honess-Ondrey has spent twenty years as a private practice therapist and many years prior as a therapist in a variety of clinical based agencies. She now devotes her time to Enneagram training, coaching, and consulting. Knowing real change is not possible without honest self-awareness, she has found the Enneagram to be the most effective tool in promoting this crucial ingredient. Her newest project that she is very excited about is the creation and execution of Moving Beyond, an Enneagram Training and Certification Program, with the mission to equip trainers in under-resourced communities to bring the Enneagram to their people.

    Working with our Inner Polarities

Whenever we identify with idealized aspects of our personality (me), we tend to dis-identify with our opposite attributes (not-me). When we are divided against ourselves, we appear as one-dimensional personalities with internal conflicts and exasperating relationships. Re-owning our disavowed parts and integrating our inner polarities lead to inner wholeness with an enriched sense of self, increased energy, and undistorted connections with others.

This program will explore each Enneagram style's ego identifications (me) and their shadows (not-me), the defenses used against our unacceptable parts , and ways of reacquainting us with and reintegrating our disowned characteristics. In short, we’ll learn the 4 R’s: how to recognize, re-label, re-own, and re-cycle all of ourselves.

    Addicted to Personality

Each of us is aware of the more dangerous addictions like alcohol or drugs, and we are probably aware of process addictions like gambling, shopping, and overeating, etc. Within the last few years we have also become increasingly aware of the epidemic of teenagers with addictions to cell phone usage and social media. This program will allow us to better understand all addictions, but especially the addiction to the compulsive behavior of our personality of type. As an example, because I work with a Type One, I am addicted to “being right.” Hope to see you there!

Doug Farmer is an International Enneagram Association Accredited Professional, a graduate of both the Atlanta Center for Wellness/Enneagram Georgia Enneagram Applications Certification Program and the Enneagram Prison Project (EPP) Guide Training Program. He is also an IEQ9 Certified Practitioner. When he retired from his first career after 31 years, he entered ministry where he served as a hospice and trauma chaplain for about 12 years. It was during his ministerial studies that he was introduced to the Enneagram in 2011. He began working with the Enneagram for personal transformation and growth as well incorporating it into his pre-marital coaching work. He established Enneagram Charleston and is an enneagram teacher/coach who works with individuals, businesses, church groups, and engaged couples. He still teaches in South Carolina prisons and lives with his wife, Cile (short for Lucile) in a suburb of Charleston, South Carolina.

    Living Beyond Your Type

How are you deepening your heart’s capacity to receive and give love? Specifically, what serves as barrier to your loving and living fully?

During our time together, these questions will guide us as we explore our capacity for love, for the power to be ourselves rather than living life in the automatic patterns of our Enneagram type/ego structure. The choice is ours: shrivel or flourish. The virtues are beautiful companions on this journey of unfurling ourselves and allowing our radiance to light our way.

Experiential exercises and dyad inquiry will facilitate our learning.

Sandra Smith, MDiv, is a Certified Narrative Enneagram teacher and an IEA (International Enneagram Association) Accredited Professional. For over 23 years, Sandra has taught the Enneagram as a tool for personal, professional and spiritual development. She serves as an international mentor/supervisor for those seeking certification in the Enneagram Professional Training Program.

Her background in business, her theological education, and nonprofit management creates a unique perspective to her staff development, team building work, and public workshops: supporting inner awareness in the service of love and compassion. Sandra’s life experiences as a female, identity as a lesbian, love for Earth, and commitment to equity and inclusion influence her teaching and writing. Sandra co-created and co-hosts the podcast, Heart of the Enneagram, that explores dimensions of the nine unique Enneagram perspectives through interviewing guests of all nine types. Since its release, the podcast has over 350,000 downloads in 80 countries. Her forthcoming book The Enneagram Map to Your Deeper Self: Living Beyond Your Type will be released by Hampton Roads Publishing in September 2024.

    Enneagram & Ecopsychology

A Nature-Based Enneagram Approach to working with Climate-Related Anger, Shame, and Fear

Ben will guide us through an exploration of our climate-related Type defense mechanisms, provide an opportunity to connect and share with others, and then invite us into a personal journey of reconnecting with the Earth. He will offer inquiry exercises and nature-based practices for each of the Enneagram Types to help process and transform our fixated responses to the climate crisis. Over time, Ben’s hope is that this style of Inner Work will help us shift from a reactive and fixated approach to solving the climate crisis, to a responsive and Present one–embodied, heartfelt, and inner-directed, drawing on the gifts of all nine Types. We hope you will join us!

Ben Campbell is a Riso-Hudson Certified Enneagram teacher and the President of Enneagram Northeast USA. Passionate about connecting our personal Inner Work with planetary healing, Ben is growing a movement of Enneagram-informed advocates for the more-than-human world. Much of Ben's teaching draws on his training with the Animas Valley Institute and the Maine Primitive Skills School, both organizations committed to healing and developing the human psyche and soul in a nature-based setting. You can learn more about Ben's work and his offerings at www.wildenneagram.com or email him directly at ben@wildenneagram.com.
